Scale before style
Furniture is drawn to your walls with the walking paths marked, so the room works before it is pretty.
The studio · Haverstraw, NY
A small studio that draws one room at a time, and takes the time to get the quiet things right.
How it began
Zellige & Sage began with a frustration familiar to anyone who has stood in a showroom holding a swatch: the sofa was lovely, and the room was wrong for it. Scale, walking paths and light had been left for last.
So we reversed the order. Every project here starts with the room itself: its measurements, the window that gets the four o’clock sun, the doorway everything must pass through. Furniture goes onto paper first, while changes still cost nothing. Only then do paint, tile and textile arrive.
The name holds the two ends of that work. Zellige is the hand-cut glazed tile that never lies flat and never looks the same twice. Sage is the colour that reads green at noon and grey at dusk. Rooms, we think, should have a little of both: something with character, and something that rests.
The studio works entirely remotely, from Haverstraw, NY, for homeowners wherever a photograph can be sent from. Each package is billed as one flat fee per room, so the conversation is about the room and never about the clock.
The method
Three decisions, always made in the same sequence. Skipping ahead is how handsome rooms end up awkward.
First · Space
Furniture is drawn to your walls with the walking paths marked, so the room works before it is pretty.
Second · Surface
Paint, tile and textile are judged together, in the light your room actually gets, never one at a time.
Third · Source
A private link lists every piece with size and delivery window, and an alternate at a gentler budget.
Studio rules
They hang above the desk, in pencil, and they decide most of the day’s questions.
The plan links to makers and retailers, and you buy directly. Nothing is marked up, and no piece is on the list because it pays us.
Ceiling height, window widths and the stairwell are confirmed on a short call first. A sofa that cannot reach the room is not a design.
One flat invoice per room, agreed before work begins. Your thoughts at midnight cost the same as your thoughts at noon.
Every brief includes the thing you refuse to part with. The room is drawn around it, not in spite of it.
Come and talk
A twenty-minute conversation tells us both whether the room is a good fit for the studio. Rooms start at $395.
